About Us

I have an interest in the culture and history of Philippines, so I put together a small team and historicphilippines.com was born. I’m presently writing about the Historic Churches of Panay Island and especially those located in Iloilo Province.

The  scope of the project will expand in the months to come to gradually include all the provinces of Panay.

You will no doubt notice that I haven’t covered many of the very famous big city churches. That’s simply because I have found that the smaller towns and villages offer some really beautiful and historically significant churches which ‘compete’ very well with their big city bretheren.

You should also know that I have not provided the complete results of my travels on the website. That’s because I’m saving some of things I’ve seen and discovered for the series e-books which I’ll be publishing in the near future.

If you like what you see here, you’ll just love the .pdf e-books, they’re packed with more photos, details and information on the churches than I could possibly include here. To obtain more information about them simply click on the button titled “Books/Calendars” on the menu bar above and follow the directions provided.

Finally, I’ve developed a Visita Iglesias presentation for Holy Week 2012 in which you can visit 7 churches in Iloilo Province and do the Way of the Cross at the same time, a major part of the Easter/Holy Week tradition that many Filipinos and Filipinas observe.

Visita Iglesias  is highlighted on the website and it is available FREE CHARGE as a FREE DOWNLOAD  for you to use and  forward to friends and relatives overseas or at home here in Philippines, with our compliments. In fact, it’s probably easier for everyone if you just provide them with our website address which is: www.historicphilippines.com so that they can download it for themselves.

If you have suggestions as to what church or churches you would like me to visit and report on just e-mail me using the form below. I’ll do my best  to  accomodate as many of your requests as possible.

Salamat!

  1. Fergus, thank u for putting together this site on the Historic Church’s , photos, historicl info, etc… I enjoyed seeing and reading the articles.
I found your website cause I am searching/getting info on my family tree. St. John Baptist Church is were my mother was baptized there in 1905, I have a copy of her Baptismal Certificate written in Spanish.
Also my grandparents were from Dingle. I was born in USA, my mother and widowed grandma migrated to Hawaii 1920.
I visited Philippines but it was a short stay and did not completed my research, I intend to go back and finish searching for documents, mainly Baptismal/Marriage/Death Certificate 1850′s era if Church still have it. Mainly search for my greatgrand parents Baptismal Certifiates.
My Question, are the Bap/Mar/Death/ certs kept at St John Baptist Church in Dingle, or where?
    James

    • James, sorry it took a few days to get back to you. We just got back from our vacation at home in Canada. I’m not sure that the documents you’re looking for will be at the church any longer, because of all the calamties that have struck it in its history. Nevertheless, we should be passing through Dingle in the week or two on our way to one of our ‘projects’ and we’ll make a point of trying to track down some of the info you’re looking for. We’ll advise ASAP..All the Best and thanks for visiting with us.

  2. What an interesting idea! You will never be bored with this project as there are so many subjects. Good Luck!

    • John in Austria: Wow, thanks for the kind words. Having great fun with it at the moment and of course you’re right there are over 400 historic churches in this province alone…got enough ‘fooder’ for the next 4 or 5 years…Thanks again & all the best.
