Mabuhay and welcome to Historic Old Philippines the home of the historic, people, homes, churches, buildings and other interesting places and things from the Philippines and the world. Of particular interest are those on our home island of Panay in the south central Philippines. This region was the cradle of Christianity in the Philippines. It is where the Spanish Galleons travelling from Mexico landed on their voyages of exploration. The explorers, Magellan, Legaspi and others were accompanied primarily by Augustinian Friars, but also by Jesuits or Dominican Friars whose task it was to evangelize the inhabitants of the islands. The Philippines has a fascinating ecclesiastical history and we try to look into it and bring you their stories, however brief they may be.
My wife Roselyn, a Filipina, and I arrived shortly after we retired. We had built our retirement home in her former hometown in anticipation of “the blessed day”.
As an expat living in a new country, in retirement, it became obvious that it was important to find an outlet that would help alleviate the boredom and to learn about the customs of the people here. Therefore, we started this site not long after arriving from Canada as a tool to help us get to know our new home better, to learn about the way of life in this country and to meet new people.
What started as basically a ‘hobby’ has now become an almost all consuming passion which takes us to every corner of Panay Island and other places around the world that we occasionally visit. The Island has a rich history and with over 4,000 churches alone, there is a whole lot of grist for the mill, we certainly have enough projects to keep us going for a lifetime of new adventures and discoveries.
We hope you enjoy your visit with us and the work we do for you!
